On Monday, May 10, 2010, Music For All Seasons celebrated its nineteenth birthday at the Russian Tea Room in New York with a spectacular event, “from Belarus to Broadway – Celebrating MUSIC!”
The program honored the legendary composer and pianist Marvin Hamlisch and his music with performances by sensational British singer Jacqui Dankworth and the dynamic jazz pianist Charlie Wood. Hamlisch talked about his work with acclaimed interviewer Nancy Shear and his remarks were interspersed with Dankworth’s performances. Hamlisch joined her at the piano for memorable renditions of Sweet Alibis and The Way We Were. The evening included a short tribute to MFAS Advisory Board member, the late Sir John Dankworth, by his daughter Jacqui. The entire program received a standing ovation.
Guests enjoyed lively bidding for a number of silent auction items including a personal song to be written for the winner by Marvin Hamlisch. A much sought-after item was a “London Escape” featuring a pair of Upper-Class tickets to London on Virgin Atlantic with three nights in a luxurious suite at the Draycott Hotel. Cocktails took place in the stunning Bear Lounge, with three members of the klezmer rock band GOLEM performing. Dinner and the program were held in the opulent Bear Ballroom. GOLEM’s full band performed their unique upbeat versions of klezmer during and after dinner.
