Grief Support Centers

Music can offer young people a way to express experiences and emotions that may be difficult to put into words. Through Voices of Change at Common Ground Grief Center, participants work alongside professional musicians and a psychology mentor in a supportive, collaborative environment. Together, they explore their experiences through conversation, music, and songwriting, developing ideas and lyrics that ultimately become an original song. Through the shared creative process, participants have the opportunity to connect with others who have experienced similar loss and recognize that they are not alone in what they are carrying.

Youth & Community Organizations

Music For All Seasons partners with youth and community organizations to bring meaningful musical experiences directly to young people in the places where they already gather, learn, and build relationships. By bringing programs into familiar and accessible community settings, MFAS creates opportunities for young people to participate in music, explore their creativity, discover new ideas, and connect with others.

Through Interactive Music Experiences, professional musicians engage young people through live, participatory music-making that may include listening, playing instruments, rhythm, movement, and other forms of creative expression. Through the Wide World of Music Project, young people explore music and cultures from around the world through instruments, rhythm, movement, and storytelling.

Together, these programs broaden young people’s exposure to music and culture while creating opportunities for participation, creativity, learning, self-expression, and connection through shared musical experiences.

Shelters for Victims of Domestic Violence

Music For All Seasons has brought interactive musical experiences to children living in shelters for victims of domestic violence since 2001. Living in a shelter can disrupt a child’s familiar routines, activities, and connections. MFAS brings music directly into this environment to provide children with opportunities to participate in something creative, engaging, and shared with others.

Through Interactive Music Experiences, professional musicians create a welcoming environment where children can listen to live music, explore instruments, participate in group music-making, and express themselves creatively. These experiences offer opportunities for choice, participation, self-expression, and connection while bringing an enjoyable shared activity into the shelter environment.

MFAS has also conducted research examining its interactive music programming with children living in domestic violence shelters. A three-year research project used established pediatric quality-of-life measures to evaluate the program and its potential impact.

Juvenile Detention Centers

Young people in juvenile detention spend much of their time in a highly structured environment, with limited opportunities to make independent choices or express themselves creatively. Music For All Seasons brings music into these facilities to create a space where young people can contribute their own ideas, make creative choices, work with others, and have their voices heard.

Through Interactive Music Experiences, small groups engage directly with professional musicians through live, participatory music-making. Participants are introduced to different musical styles, interact with musicians, explore instruments and rhythm, and become active participants in the experience.

Through Voices of Empowerment, participants work alongside professional musicians and a psychology mentor in a collaborative songwriting process. Conversation, music, and songwriting give participants different ways to explore and express their experiences, ideas, and perspectives. Together, they develop those ideas into an original song—something tangible that they have created, shaped, and can call their own.

Across both programs, the focus is not simply on bringing a performance into the facility. It is on creating opportunities for choice, expression, collaboration, accomplishment, and connection through music.

Residential Homes for Foster Children

Music For All Seasons brings professional musicians into residential homes for children in foster care, creating opportunities for young people to experience music within the place they are living. For children whose daily lives may include significant changes in routine, surroundings, and relationships, shared musical experiences can provide opportunities for creativity, participation, self-expression, and connection with others.

Through Interactive Music Experiences, young people engage directly with professional musicians representing a variety of musical styles and instruments. Participants can listen to live music, interact with musicians, explore instruments, and take part in group music-making, giving them an active role in the experience rather than simply being an audience.

MFAS’s history of bringing music into residential settings extends beyond the New Jersey region. Beginning in 2001, MFAS brought professional musicians to children living at Orangewood Children’s Home in California, demonstrating the organization’s long-standing commitment to reaching young people with musical experiences wherever they are.

Children’s Hospitals

Being in a hospital can take young people away from the familiar routines, activities, and experiences of everyday life. Music For All Seasons brings live music into children’s hospitals to create opportunities for young patients to engage in something creative, interactive, and familiar within the hospital environment.

Through Interactive Music Experiences, professional musicians engage children through live music, conversation, and participatory activities in spaces such as common rooms and playrooms. When appropriate, children can explore instruments, make music, and become active participants rather than simply an audience.

These experiences offer young patients opportunities for self-expression, creativity, social interaction, and connection with others while bringing moments of enjoyment and normalcy into their time in the hospital. Programs are adapted to the needs and requirements of each healthcare facility, including appropriate cleaning and disinfection of instruments used by participants.
